Admissions & Tuition
Apply online! Submit an application on our website and pay the application fee, including the required documents:
- Copy of your Passport Page.
- Financial Documents - a bank statement showing at least $3,000 for every month you plan to study.
- Transcripts from high school or university if you plan to study at a U.S. university.
We will send I-20 with your SEVIS number so you can begin scheduling your visa appointment.
If all of your documents and information are submitted with the application, we should be able to issue your I-20 in 1-2 business days. Sometimes it can take a little longer if there are questions about your documents. If we do not receive all of your documents with the application, we will let you know right away in a confirmation email, but that also will most likely prolong the process.
If you compare WESLI tuition to similar schools, you will find a great deal. Plus, you will get support and a lifelong community in addition to the class content.
Here is an example summary of costs for studying General English Essential (24 weekly lessons) for 8 weeks (2023):
- Tuition = $3,760
- Health Insurance = $260 (2 months)
- IF Dormitory, Shared Room = $1,880 (2 months)
- IF Homestay with Meals = $2,120/session (2 months)
Materials fee = $100-$200 per level (may be 4-week or 8-week session)
TOTAL 8 week Cost (approximate) = $6,200 – $6,440
During your studies you will have other expenses, include housing, food, books, transportation, and spending money.
Some spending money (about $200/month) is recommended for activities and miscellaneous expenses.
The information above is subject to change, and additional weeks of study will decrease weekly tuition and housing prices.
Tuition is due on the first day of class. It is best to pay before you arrive so you can transfer funds with minimal fees and not worry about it on your first day (you can pay after visa approval, unless you are in a high visa denial country). The only fee due before you get your visa is the $125 application fee.
Please note that some other fees apply for students applying for Overseas Conditional Admission, express mail, Change of Status, or who are applying from countries with high visa denial rates.
You can pay via PayPal at this link: paypal.me/wesli.
You can also pay by wire transfer (bank details will be provided in your invoice) or by card, cash or check. The wire transfer information is listed on your invoice, or please contact study@wesli.com for the information.
WESLI has built in a "discount" for those studying longer than 4 weeks. This is to help those with long-term goals achieve them at a good price.
Here is how it works:
Tuition for one full-time 4-week session of General English Essential (24 hours/week) is $2,240. If you study for more than 4 weeks — for 8 weeks, 16 weeks, or even 48 weeks, for example — you will receive a discounted rate depending on the number of weeks in your study plan. For example, tuition for 8 weeks is only $3,760, saving you $720 from the 4-week rate.
Please contact us for details and to discuss your study plan. Students who will attend WESLI with F-1 visas must study full-time, 24 or more lessons per week.
If you pay on or before the first day of class, a substantial tuition discount is included. However, if you need to pay in installments, you will pay at a higher weekly rate, but with more frequent payments. Please contact us if you will not be able to pay your full tuition in full by the first day of class, and we will discuss plan options with you.
Submit an application on our website, including the required documents, and indicate that you are a transfer student. We will send the necessary forms to transfer your SEVIS record from your other school to WESLI. Please note that you will need to start at our next available start date after you leave your previous school!
Visas & I-20s
You can learn about getting a visa on our "Pre-Arrival" webpage. Please read below for an overview of different visas and documents:
You can apply for a F-1 visa if you plan to be a nonimmigrant student enrolling in academic programs at a university, college, high school, private elementary school, seminary, conservatory or another academic institution, including an English language program. More information about the government requirements is listed on their website.
This classification is for individuals approved to participate in work-and study-based exchange visitor programs. All J-1 nonimmigrants must be sponsored by an organization that is designated by the Department of State.
WESLI can accept J-1 students part-time while fulfilling J-1 requirements, but we cannot process visa documentation for J-1 visas.
An I-20 is a U.S. government document that allows you to study at WESLI. It lists your program start date and end date.
All the information on an I-20 needs to be up-to-date during your study at WESLI. It is a very important document, so please keep this form safe. Notify your school of any changes to your contact information, study dates, or travel plans.
It is possible to maintain your visa status by following the government rules. You must:
- have a valid I-20 from WESLI. If your I-20 is going to expire soon, talk to us.
- study full-time according to the US Government requirements.
- not accept off-campus employment.
- not let your passport expire.
- be in good standing with your school.
If you cannot keep your visa status, then you will need to leave the country.
Yes, you can transfer to another school.
You must have both of these conditions:
- you are NOT out-of-status.
- another school in the U.S. has accepted you and you have a plan to study there, and you can provide documentation.
To prove this, show the new school’s acceptance letter to WESLI administrative staff. The new school will provide a transfer request form, and you need to sign it. Then, WESLI administrative staff will complete your transfer and send the form directly to the new school. WESLI doesn't complete the transfer. Contact your new school to check when you will be transferred.
Please note that there is only one I-20 record per student in the immigration system. Once your I-20 is transferred out of WESLI, it means you must report to the new school to study there. WESLI is no longer able to make any changes to your I-20 record. If you sign a transfer request form, but decide you don’t want to transfer to the new school, you must contact the new school immediately.
Submit an application on our website, including the required documents, and indicate that you are a transfer student.
We will send the necessary forms to you so you can transfer your SEVIS record from your other school to WESLI. One document will be a "Transfer In" document - you need to complete the top half and then give to your school so that they can submit the changes. Please note that you will need to start at our next available start date after you leave your previous school.
If you want to travel within the US, contact Student Services to get approved travel plans.
If you want to travel outside the U.S. and not return to the U.S., you don’t need to do anything.
If you want to travel outside the U.S. and return to the U.S., you must have WESLI administrative staff sign your I-20. You also must study full-time when you come back.
You cannot stay in the US on a F-1 student visa and not study full. There are limited situations where this is possible for students in crisis.
For students studying at least 10 months, you can take a 8-week session vacation (similar to a summer vacation) after studying for 8 months continuously. You must register before you leave for vacation for full-time classes for the session starting after your break.
For students transferring to the next school, you can transfer up to 5 months before the next available start date. During this time, you are not required to study.
If you finish your studies, you must leave the U.S. within 60 days of your last day of full-time study. Or you must transfer to another school within 60 days of your last day of full-time study.
Two Important Immigration Facts for F-1 Students:
• If you move, please email study@wesli.com with your address change within 10 days of your move.
• If you do not register for class and do not tell us your plans, your record in SEVIS (Immigration’s electronic record of students) will automatically be deleted. You will be out-of-status. This is a very big problem and part of your permanent immigration record.
Please talk to the administrative staff at WESLI if you have any questions about this information.
WESLI can issue the school documents you need to complete your change of status (COS). We recommend getting a lawyer to help you through the process.
To begin, complete the student application on our website and indicate that you are a change of status student. We will send you a confirmation email with next steps. Please note that there is an administrative COS fee of $200, as well as a nonrefundable tuition deposit of $2000, for this process.
Students may NOT enter the U.S. after the start date on the I-20. If you need to enter later, please tell us so that we can put that date on the I-20, allowing you to enter later.
Students may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the date on the I-20. For example, if the start date on your I-20 is May 31, 2028, you may arrive in the U.S. between May 1, 2028 and May 31, 2028.
You must leave the country within 60 days of your last day of full-time study.
Programs & Classes
We run a wide variety of courses for individuals and groups from our school in Madison, Wisconsin. We can also customize the curriculum to suit your specific academic interests and goals. See Our Programs page to find out more!
All of our regular group ESL courses are currently in person in Madison.
If you need an online option, we have tutoring available, which can be scheduled online based on when you are available! Online Courses are personalized tutoring lessons that you can decide your focus. We can also craft a custom group online for businesses and groups with a shared interest.
We have partnerships with a number of colleges and universities in the United States. There are two different ways that this can benefit WESLI students:
- Overseas Conditional Admission (OCA). This means that we would contact the school of your choice on your behalf, prior to your arrival at WESLI, and if they accept you they will send a conditional admission letter to help strengthen your visa application. You would then transfer to that school upon completing WESLI's English program.
- The WESLI Recommendation. This means that when you complete your studies at WESLI, with a grade of a 'B' or higher, our partners accept this as proof that you are proficient in English and do not require the TOEFL or IELTS.
The Wisconsin Academic Experience, a partner program with the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Visiting International Scholars Program is a non-degree program. It is a study abroad opportunity that helps students improve their English proficiency and experience for-credit courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Students applying to this program must already have completed one semester of college/university study.
Students completing this program will receive a UW transcript for courses taken.
The amount of hours per week that you study depends on your visa type.
If you are coming on an F-1 student visa, you are required to study at least 20 hours per week, which is 24-26 lessons per week. You can increase it up to 30 lessons per week if you choose, for a more intensive option. If you are on a tourist visa, you are required to study part time, which is 20 lessons per week or less.
We won't know your exact schedule until you have completed our English placement test on your first day, as that will determine which class level you will be in.
All of our classes are currently in-person at WESLI, and take place between Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 4:50pm. Most students come to WESLI every day for class, although some part time students only come twice or three times a week.
Below is a sample schedule for 24-26 lessons per week:
This depends when your classes are, but in general you will have approximately 4 hours per day spent in class, with an additional ~4 hours of homework to complete. You will have a break for lunch, and other class breaks throughout the day in which you can study or explore the many coffee shops, restaurants, and shops on the square within walking distance of WESLI. If you live with one of our homestays, at the end of the day you would likely take the bus back to your homestay to enjoy a meal and perhaps an evening activity with your host family.
You need to have a 'C' Grade or higher to move to the next level for Levels 100-600. For example, at the end of Level 300, you need to earn a 'A, B, or C' to move to the 400 level.
To move to the 700 level, you will need to earn a 'BC' in the 600 level before moving up.
Housing & Local Area
Housing requests are honored as available. If your preference is not available, we will discuss your options with you as soon as availability is determined.
Choosing a homestay option does not guarantee this accommodation; availability is subject to homestay family availability.
Yes, each homestay will have house rules or expectations. You will need to follow rules as you become part of their family and experience life like they do.
If an issue arises, you can talk with WESLI staff to discuss the best next step for the issue.
Most issues with a homestay are directly related to communication. It's important to be open to new ideas, to listen, and to understand the situation from different point of views. You can communicate directly with your homestay or you can talk with a WESLI staff, and we will assist with mediating for you and the host.
If there is an issue that unsafe, WESLI staff will take steps for your safety. Some issues that students experience are personal preferences, so talk with a WESLI staff to find the best solution.
Madison's population is about 260,000 people, and the metropolitan area is about 600,000. The surrounding cities blend into Madison, so it feels like one very large city than multiple cities.
Madison is small enough to feel safe and have easy access to experiences and connections. The area is large enough to experience many different things and have a bus transportation system that spans across the different cities.
WESLI is easily reachable by the Metro city bus. There are many routes designed for quicker rides. For homestays, you can expect to take 20-50 minutes on the bus, including walking to the bus stop.
Some students may be placed in housing close enough to walk or bike. WESLI does not have parking available, however, there are some city parking ramps that you can pay for when using a car.
Business and Professional students are welcome to book a private apartment with Voyaguer with beautiful, single occupancy located downtown. There are other local options for short-term rentals for professionals. Contact us for more information.
If you have a group that is planning to study, we can do our best to arrange your preferred accommodation choice or recommend local independent options.
Have a group of more than 5? Please contact us to confirm details.
Yes! You will need a space that provides privacy and a place you can make to feel like home. Couples/families can book some homestay options. Our Housing Coordinator can recommend alternative options you can book independently in the community.
Health & Safety
Yes, Madison is safer than most large cities. The midwest culture is friendly and helpful. However, crime is possible anywhere. Each individual takes responsibility for their safety. We recommend making sure your doors and windows are locked before you leave your house and overnight. While incidents of crime are low, it is in part because people take responsibility to be safe.
F-1 visa students are required to have health insurance. Medical care in the United States is very expensive, and health insurance is a low cost way to minimize large bills in case of emergency.
If you have health insurance from your own country, please bring your card or certificate to prove you are insured.
If you do not have insurance from your country, you will enroll in the insurance plan available for WESLI students and pay the fee every two months with your tuition. Insurance for two months costs $260. The insurance covers the cost for most medical treatments. However, it will not pay for general health physicals, teeth, eyes, pre-existing conditions, or problems caused by alcohol and drugs.
