Welcome to ALS 500 & 600! You are in the right place if you are looking for your extensive listening opportunities. If you are not an ALS 500 or 600 student that’s ok – you can still attend these events if you would like. If you are an ALS 500 or 600 student, you need to attend one of the events from the list below. After you attend one of these events, write a brief summary and reaction – you can ask your teacher if you have any questions about this. This is the FIRST Extensive Listening Log opportunity of the session – make sure you talk to your teacher about when your ELL is due.

1) Lecture: Experiences in Mali and lessons for American Lives & Culture

During his time with the Democracy Campaign, McCabe led several successful efforts to make government more transparent for its citizens. He formerly was comm. director and legislative liaison for the Madison Schl. Dist., a legislative aide, State Assembly candidate and newspaper reporter. Mike was raised on his family's dairy farm in Clark County and is a grad of UW-Madison, with degrees in journalism and political science. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali from 1989 – 1991.

Professor Mark Craven of Biostatistics & Medical Informatics describes how large sets of data can be sifted and winnowed to provide insights into health trends and disease treatments.

3) Party with the Stars @ UW Space Place

Find out what objects are currently in the night sky and where to find them. Following the indoor presentation, we will set up telescopes outside for viewing, weather permitting.

4) Arboretum Walk: Winter Water

Join this free naturalist-led hike. Learn how ponds, wetlands, and springs support wildlife during this time of year.  Remember to dress for the weather!

5) WESLI Documentary Series

Join us in room 210 for a special showing of a documentary about Martin Luther King Jr., the man celebrated today.
